After a long, dark winter, our senses slowly open again. We begin to crave clarity, freshness — something alive in the cup. This is the season for microlots.  But what is a microlot? We have seen it mentioned quite many times in the World of Speciality coffees but is good to know the exact meaning.

A microlot is a small, carefully separated batch of coffee, grown, harvested, and processed with exceptional attention to detail and traceability. It reflects the terroir of the land and the “hand” of the producer. Unlike regional coffees — which combine beans from several farms to express a broader landscape — a microlot tells a more intimate story.

Still, the word can be misleading: a microlot does not automatically guarantee an extraordinary cup. Quality depends on many factors. Yes, these coffees are handled with great care, but terroir sets the limits. Even a race car cannot reach full speed on rough terrain. In the same way, no matter how precise the processing, the land ultimately defines the ceiling of potential. That’s why some well-selected regional coffees can sometimes score higher than certain microlots.

Then comes the sensory dimension — aroma, acidity, body, aftertaste, flavour. Here, subjectivity begins. What feels elegant and delicate to one palate may feel bit boring to another. At Cafetoria, our intention is simple: when you choose one of our microlots, you know what to expect. Each coffee is selected through rigorous cupping and must score 85.5 or higher under SCA standards. But numbers alone are not enough.

We select coffees that reflect our flavour philosophy and consider the coffee lover we want to reach with each lot. Every microlot is chosen with intention — for a certain palate, a certain moment, a certain experience — and it must carry a nice story behind the cup. Our aim with our microlots is to build trust through consistency and clarity. We don’t look for coffees that are merely “interesting.” We look for coffees that are enjoyable, expressive, and leave you craving the next sip.
